Andrew Lucas
Portrait Painter
I'm a portrait painter, working exclusively in oils.

PAUSE FOR A MOMENT AND CONSIDER WHERE THIS PAINTING ON THE RIGHT, OF ZOE,
WILL BE IN 50 YEARS TIME.

Will it be lost among the thousands of images that will be taken of Zoe over that time? Or will it have been seen and commented upon by all that pass it by, on whose ever wall it happens to hang, as it is passed down through the generations.

Born in Victoria, in 1955, I have painted most of my life, but have worked professionally as a photographer from my early twenties. I have now made a complete transition to painting, with my skills as a commercial and portrait photographer being utilised in the lighting and shooting of the sitter in preparation for the painting.
My first solo exhibition was titled "Portrait of a Local" at the Eltham Library Gallery in 2014. I followed that up with a solo exhibition at Bridges of Hurstbridge with an exhibition titled "I am a child". I have since participated in a number of group exhibitions and the occasional commission.

The Studio

Set amid the gum trees of Montmorency, my home studio is disturbed only by the laugh of kookaburras and the occasional screech of cockatoos in the nearby bush.
A photographic and painting studio work well together. My lighting is second to none, and is key to both forms of art. Good control of lighting lets me concentrate on expressions and mood, which is key to a portrait that evokes a reaction from the viewer.

My Mission

To demonstrate the true worth of a good portrait painting to those that haven’t necessarily been art lovers.
